how much can you give?
I loved this idea that I heard about from my friend, Marci, who saw it here. Originally, this was done as a fantastic 38th birthday celebration. It can be used in so many ways, though! I’m excited to show about how many opportunities there are to tweak this feel-good-help-others awesome concept…
The basic premise is to do as many Random Acts of Kindness as you can during your date. I planned a couple of kindness acts in advance and then we were on the look out for others that came our way as we were on our date. This is a great idea to do with another couple, also. You could make a game of it and for a portion of your date compete to see who can do the most random acts in a 30 minute time frame and then spend the rest of your evening looking for opportunities to serve together.
This particular evening was a very short date so we didn’t get to do as much as we had hoped. I can’t wait to do it again when we have a longer night out.
Here are some things we did:
*Write a letter or make a phone call to a relative you’ve not spoken to recently enough
*Strike up a conversation with the person you order your lunch from, let them know you appreciate their friendliness
*Buy lunch for the person behind you in line at the restaurant
*Look for a way to specifically compliment the person that helps you at a restaurant or store. ie: I like the way your smile comes through in your eyes when you talk to us. (I know that may sound cheesy but being specific feels more sincere)
*Purchase a dozen chicken wraps from Wendy’s and give them out to hungry people
*Help someone with their groceries
*Give out roses to the people who work at Walmart
*Return all of the random-left-everywhere-carts to the cart corral or the store
*Tell the greeter at Walmart that you appreciate how much they smile
*If you know someone who is alone or who is in need of groceries, purchase a gift card from a local grocery store and take it to them. As an added way to brighten their day bring along some flowers.
*Help a person get their dog back when it runs away
*Smile and wave at everyone you see
*Write a thank you note to someone who was helpful, kind, or inspired you this week. Send it in the mail or deliver it in person
*Surprise your kids by bringing something home for them
Have fun spreading kindness. Watch out! This may become your favorite date!
Happiness,
Davina

Hi Davina – love the look and direction of your new blog! I love this RAK idea. I have been talking to Jay about doing it for my next birthday, and this post gets me even more excited to do it! Good luck with your new adventure. 🙂
Me, too, Amy! I really want to do it for my next birthday. We’re building up to it. 🙂 It’s surprising how long some of the things take and then how quick other kindnesses can be…Can’t wait to see you do it for your birthday!
Thank you Davina! We have been in a “dating funk” until I started reading through your ideas and looking at the pictures! It totally inspired me, so, I sent a text to my hubby who is in Germany and explained that we are going to have an amazingly fun and easy date every week! Let’s just say… we are both thrilled! Thank you for the much needed boost to get our “date” on! LOVE IT!
I’m so glad that this has inspired you to date. Woohoo! 🙂 Thank you for letting me know that. It really means a lot to me that you would take the time to leave this note here for me.
Thanks for the great reminder about what dates should really be like! So many ideas to choose from! We are set for a long while!
They can be simple and fun with a bit of creativity, can’t they? I love that! More ideas coming up! 🙂
