Have you heard of Girls on the Run?
If you haven’t, you need to run over to the Girls on the Run site!
I can’t say enough about how much I love it. If you have a little girl who is in the 3rd-5th grade this is where she needs to be two days a week after school.
At first, I thought that Girls on the Run was just about running, completing a 5k, the end. Nothing else. About a month ago I found out it was so much more. Girls on the run is an opportunity for my daughters to realize how amazing they are, just how they are, celebrate their quirks, differences, learn how to be a good friend, and then give all of that good stuff to the community. It’s about “preparing girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.” Of course, this is what I hope I’m instilling in them as their mom. I want them to grow up to be these incredible women who can see their own gifts and share them in beautiful ways.
I don’t want them to doubt themselves.
I want them to be strong. I want them be filled with compassion and giving in a way that fills others without emptying them. I want them to know that they can do hard things. And even though I want to do all of that for them…I’m all for a little help.
So…when it wasn’t going to work out for them to be on our school’s Girls on the Run team (because they’re in chorus). I tried to figure out how to get them on another team and that wasn’t going to work out, and then it happened. They suggested I could be a coach…and in about a minute…I was.
Now, I get to be the coach of these crazy, silly, fun, full of enthusiasm, loving, happy girls twice a week while we learn about how super awesome we each are and train for a 5k. I’m not a runner. Not even close.
But I’m doing this. They’re doing this.
Wish you could be a Girls on the Run Coach?
You know you do!

Oh I love this! Need to find out if there’s a group around us. That would be super fun to volunteer with my high school girls!
Maya! You absolutely would love it. The energy of these girls, their insight on life, their determination…it’s motivating and beautiful. Make sure to come back and tell me about it. 🙂
Awesome! I can’t wait until the my girls are old enough to get involved in this. It seems like it would be an extension of the great things they learn and do with Girl Scouts.
I don’t really know a whole lot about Girl Scouts so it may be similar. I can’t say enough good stuff about Girls on the Run!
